The Fort Calhoun Teammates had an outing to the Creighton basketball game on February 23, 2014. They bussed 49 mentors with their mentees to the game and were able to meet players and get autographs after the game. It was a huge success. We have been studying embryology in science in second grade. Mr. Landon brought us 12 eggs on February 12th. We learned about how to take care of them and the process of hatching. Mr. Landon came back on the 18th and candled the eggs. One was not fertilized and one was cracked so, we had a possibility of hatching 10 chicks. On February 27th when we got here in the morning, 3 eggs were pipped, which means they had holes in the them and we could see the chicks breathing. By the end of the day, we were able to see three hatch and then one hatched later that night. This is a fun learning experience for all of us!
The students and faculty at FCHS helped raise almost 450 items for The Bridge. Pictured is the winning homeroom — Mrs. Lloyd and Mrs. Welchert’s seventh and eighth graders. They brought in 148 items and Mr. Pitt’s eleventh grade homeroom was a close second with 126 items. The winning homeroom students will get to go to the front of the lunch line each day next week (March 3rd- March 7th). This event was organized by MCC and POPP. The event organizers wanted to do a special shout out to Justin Union as the individual who brought in the most items for the cause!! Pictured with the students in the front center is The Bridge’s Rural Outreach Advocate and Coordinator for Washington and Burt Counties, Jody Koziol. The Bridge was formerly known as the Crisis Center for Domestic Abuse and Sexual Assault. The Bridge’s mission is to prevent and eliminate violence in the lives of women, children and men, through empowerment, education and social change. Congratulations to Christopher Lopez for earning an Honorable Mention award from the Nebraska Department of Aeronautics Aviation Art Contest. Christopher will receive his award on Saturday April 5, 2014, 1:30 p.m. at the National Guard base near the Lincoln Airport – in the Operations building. Numerous military and civilian aircraft are planned to be on display as well as an exciting program for everyone’s enjoyment.
To kick off the Reading Olympics program, Fort Calhoun Elementary students paraded throughout the school and into the gymnasium for the opening ceremony. Each time the students complete 5 reading events, they will earn a gold medal. They can continue earning medals through the end of the program on February 28. Hard work pays off. And this proves true for Paul High Horse. Through continuing his art education, he has enriched his knowledge and found an abstract, mixed media style to communicate his Lakota Nation traditions and values. And, this isn’t going unnoticed. Paul, as well as other Native American artists, has been asked to show his pieces at the Photographers and the Plains Indians exhibit at KANEKO February 7 – April 19.
The opening reception for Photographers and the Plains Indians is Friday, February 7 from 6 – 9pm. This reception is free and open to the public. Exhibit runs February 7 – April 19. Open hours are Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm and Saturdays, 1 – 5pm. If your schedule allows, come and support Paul. Hope to see you opening night.

On Friday January 10th, 2014, the Strauss Performing Arts Center on the campus of UNO was filled to the brim as families and friends from around the state came to hear the fantastic UNO Middle School Honor Choir directed by the world famous conductor, Jim Papoulis. Each student auditioned and was selected to participate based on their audition. This year was by far one of the best performances given by the honor choir and Fort Calhoun had 5 students there to represent. Congratulations to Brian Drowne, Olivia Evans, Julie Klemm, Justin Union and Jordan Wear on your acceptance and WONDERFUL performance
On Monday January 13th at 6:30 pm, Katie Edie, Julie Hofer, and Matt Swoboda performed alongside 150 other students from across the state in the Doane College Honor Choir in Crete Nebraska. They spent 2 days working and learning from Dr. Kurt Runestad as they prepared for the final concert Monday evening. The performance was wonderful! Congratulations to each one of you!!
