Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraising Success

As a means to advocate for breast cancer awareness, students and staff purchased bracelets from FBLA during the month of October. The club raised $470 from donations and selling pink bracelets, which will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation to help the fight against breast cancer. October 18th was designated as a Pink Out day at school and pink was worn at the last football and home volleyball games in October as well.  Thank you to everyone who donated money and bought bracelets!

Socktober at Fort Calhoun Elementary

Wow! We are so proud of the awesome students and staff we have here at the elementary! They donated 1,049 pairs of socks to the Open Door Mission and Lydia House and 304 single socks to the Put a Sock in it campaign. Socktober has come to an end, but their generosity will continue to give to others during these cold winter months. Also, Crazy Socks Contest was a success! Thanks to those who participated in this contest! Our Autumn Pointe residents and Student Council members enjoyed seeing your creativity! The top 5 winners were Brenner Wright, Ali Bell, Addy Musser, Carly Finch and Caleb Larsen.  The upstairs class with the most socks was Mrs. Clausen’s Class and the class with the most socks downstairs was Miss Carlsen’s class.  Student Council wants to thank you all again for supporting the cause. And most importantly, thank you for making a difference in another person’s life.

Fire Safety Awareness Day

Fort Calhoun Elementary School held a fire safety awareness day on October 24th. Fire is the second major cause of accidental death and injury to children, with the vast majority of these injuries and fatalities occurring in the home. This program provided students with fire safety information and skills, while also allowed students a chance to practice those skills in a realistic, controlled environment under the guidance of the Fort Calhoun fire department and the Nebraska State Fire Marshal. The fire safety trailer is a mobile travel trailer in which students were able to: walk through a kitchen, living room, and bedroom and spot fire hazards, practice simple methods of eliminating potentially dangerous situations, feel a “hot door” and locate an emergency escape route, recognize a smoke alarm and exit using a ladder as the fire safety house fills with a non-toxic smoke. The goal of the program is to demonstrate what to do in the event of a fire within the home. The fire safety trailer gives us the best opportunity to simulate a residential fire and to have the students practice how to exit safely.

Students in Mrs. Clausen’s 1st grade class enjoyed the program very much. We heard students say “I want to do it again!” several times upon exiting the van. “One student said it was a little scary but still fun.” and many students said it was “cool.” Thank you to Fort Calhoun Volunteer Fireman, the Fire Marshal and Cadets Caleb Grosse-Rhode and Colton Mallory.

Sixth Grade Visits Summit Lake

Our recent field trip to Sixth Grade Conservation Day at Summit Lake near Tekamah lucked into a perfect weather day. We spent the morning observing nature on a guided hike through the hills. We also had a chance to get up close and personal with some interesting critters! The afternoon included experts who spoke about the importance of conserving our natural resources as we rotated though soils, forestry, water cycle, and fishing stations.

New Elementary Playground

Students were very excited to see the new Fort Calhoun Elementary playground. A ribbon cutting ceremony was performed on Wednesday, Sept. 21st to cheers all around. The new playground was a project started last summer and funded largely by donations from the PFE and the City Council’s Keno Fund. Thank you to both of those organizations!
