On Friday, November 10th, Fort Calhoun Community Schools honored our Veterans by having a Veteran’s Day Ceremony. The event was hosted by our Skills USA students with an introduction by Wylie Oliver and the MC being Kloey Appel. The High School Band and Choir both performed several patriotic songs including the Armed Forces Salute. The 4th Graders also helped us celebrate by performing the song “Stars and Stripes Forever.” Mark Erikson was the Keynote Speaker. Several service members from the Military were in attendances and enjoyed a luncheon prepared by the school kitchen staff and served by the Skills USA students. Thank you to everyone who helped with the event. Once again, Fort Calhoun Schools would like to thank all our Veterans for their service to our country.
Many thanks to the Fort Calhoun PFE for sponsoring the assembly “Grossology” from the Omaha Children’s Museum. The Elementary students discovered some of the anatomy’s most interesting facts in the most disgustingly fun way. Some 6th graders I spoke to said: “it was a little gross.” However, they liked the visuals and they also said: “it was a fun way to learn about our bodies.” Thanks again PFE for all you do for our students.
Congratulations to our Marching Band for receiving a superior rating at the NSBA State Marching Band Competition. Great job on all the hard work and time spent to reach this goal. As a means to advocate for breast cancer awareness, students and staff purchased t-shirts and bracelets from FBLA during the month of October. The club raised $380 from selling pink t-shirts and bracelets, which will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation to help the fight against breast cancer. October 24th was designated as a Pink Out day at school and pink was worn at the last home football and volleyball games in October as well. Thank you to everyone who bought t-shirts and bracelets!
PUN DUNN DUNNIN!!! The students had a great time coming up with creative costumes that had to be a pun, which is a play on words. First, they had to write an essay explaining the different parts of their punny costume. Then, they created the costume in class using things like cardboard, paper, and their creative minds. Finally, they presented the costumes to an outside audience. It was a blast seeing their creative juices flow! Some of the ideas they came up with were Super Bowl, Butter Fingers, Burger King, Fanpire, Smarty Pants, Anonymouse, and Dunkin Donuts.
On Oct. 8th, the dance team got up early to show their support at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. They started the morning by helping to set up and pass out t-shirts. Then they cheered on the sidelines during the survivor walk and finished up by showing support during the walk. Bailey Bannister, a member of the dance team, gets involved every year and this year encouraged her team to join her. The Race for the Cure is the world’s largest and most successful education and fundraising event for breast cancer ever created. The event raises funds and awareness for breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. Thank you dance team for volunteering your time!
