It was a great year for the food drive at Fort Calhoun Elementary. The event was organized by the student council and all the items collected were donated to the food pantry at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Calhoun. The winning classroom was Mrs. Hodson’s 3rd-grade class and they won an ice cream party! The Student Council Members had fun setting the can up to look like a replica of the businesses in Fort Calhoun and then delivered them to the church. Thank you to all the families who donated cans this year! As you can see from the pictures, it was a huge success.
Veterans Honored at Fort Calhoun High School 2022
On Friday, November 11th, Fort Calhoun Community Schools honored our Veterans by having a Veteran’s Day Ceremony. The event was hosted by our Skills USA students with an introduction by Skills USA President Wyatt Appel and the MC Sophia Thomas. The High School Band and Choir both performed several patriotic songs including the Armed Forces Salute and “We Honor You”. Plus, the 4th-grade students performed the patriotic song “On Veteran’s Day”. The keynote speaker was Fort Calhoun Alumni, Col. Janel Nelson. Students enjoyed a military trivia contest by Col. Nelson. AJ Duros finished by playing “Taps” right before the Color Guard retired the colors. Several service members from the Military were in attendance and enjoyed a luncheon prepared by the school kitchen staff and served by the Skills USA students. Thank you to everyone who helped with this event. Once again, Fort Calhoun Schools would like to thank all our Veterans for their service to our country.
Air Force ROTC Rep Visits Fort Calhoun
Our Fort Calhoun High school students had the opportunity to learn more about Air Force ROTC and the ROTC scholarship program when Second Lieutenant Catharine R. Donahoe, a Gold Bar Recruiter from the Air Force stopped by.
We were also thrilled that Aaron Johnson (FCHS alumni ‘2019), a senior at UNO who serves as the cadet wing vice wing commander (CW/CV) (which is a cadet colonel rank in the AFROTC) could accompany her.

Seventh Graders Send Military Care Packages
The Seventh Graders sent 17 Military Care packages to conclude their Seminar Class.
They began the Community Service project with a guest speaker. Coach Thomas spoke with them about what it’s like to be deployed, what it means to those serving to receive a package, and what items to include in the boxes. Students donated items and the Knights of Columbus donated funds to purchase the rest of the supplies. Finally, on the last day of class, students gathered together to stuff boxes with all the goodies.

Student Assistance Program
Life is hard. Sometimes it’s just too much. Students and their families deal with a variety of issues on a daily basis. School counselors, teachers, and parents are among the most important adults in a child’s life. Sometimes, when a child or teenager is dealing with a specific issue, it helps to have someone outside of the school that they can talk to, someone who can serve as an “unbiased party” in the eyes of a child.
As a parent/guardian of a Fort Calhoun student, your student and your family are eligible for counseling sessions through Arbor Family Counseling. The district-funded student assistance program provides 2 free sessions. Arbor Family Counseling provides professionals seasoned at helping children and teenagers and their family members deal with pressures and issues that arise.
