Each judge at District Music Contest can select ONE performance they listened to throughout the entire contest in all classes to receive an OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE AWARD from the NSAA. With three judges there were three awards given this year, and for the second year in a row, Fort Calhoun won two of the three awards. Congratulations to Tessa Dethlefs and Ben Bonacci on receiving these honors for their solo performances.
Thank You American Legion Auxiliary
Thank you to the Fort Calhoun American Legion Auxiliary for the donation to our school libraries. They donated the book “The Poppy Lady: Moina Belle Michael and Her Tribute to Veterans” by Barbara Elizabeth Walsh to the Elementary library and the publication titled “Indivisible, The Story of our Flag” to the High School Library.
Art Class at Arlington Art Exhibit
On Wednesday April 20th twelve students participated in a conference wide art exhibit hosted by Arlington High School. The students had an opportunity to create a work of art inspired by Bellevue artist Bart Vargas who has named his sculptures bottleballs, which are made primarily from discarded plastic bottles. The idea behind the sculptures is to bring awareness to the amount of waste our society produces. The twelve students that participated entered a total of forty-seven works of art into the competition. Forty of those pieces earned awards. Skylar Wear earned the award for Outstanding Artist from Fort Cahoun, which was voted on by all conference students who participated in the event. Arlington High School is hoping to make this an annual event.
Creighton Athletes Visit Fort Calhoun Elementary
Fort Calhoun Elementary School held a 7 week March Madness contest, a reading incentive program, designed to encourage kids to read at home. Preschool through grade 2 competed against each other, and grades 3 through 6 went head-to-head, so they had 2 winning classrooms: Mrs. Clausen’s kindergartners and Mrs. Leishman’s 3rd graders. The prize was a catered lunch of Godfather’s pizza and time with Creighton players. Zach Hanson and Malik Albert were great sports. They played ball with the kids, signed autographs, and posed for pictures.

The 2nd grade Social Studies class is studying Agriculture in the Classroom and helping the community at the same time. They are growing sweet potato vines for the Fort Calhoun CommUnity Garden. They are learning to grow crops and how to become producers and consumers. The students are responsible for planting the potatoes, taking care of them, and observing the project each week to compare and collect data. They researched sweet potatoes and put together an interactive and informational bulletin board.
