Congratulations to our students who participated in the BOCH Festival at UNO on January 28th.
Senior Kloey Appel completed a 6-foot tall painting that she began working on during the first semester. This is the first of many paintings that will adorn the Pioneer Path hallway. The plan is for students to showcase their creativity and artistic talents by creating paintings that are based on school and community activities. Next year, Kloey plans to attend Washburn University in Topeka Kansas to study psychology.

Creativity and Imagination at Work in Kids Club
Each Friday, the students in Kids Club complete a seasonally appropriate art project. Not only do these art projects allow the students to use their creativity and imagination, but the projects also help the students work on improving their listening skills and following directions. We have a wide variety of age levels at Kids Club and each student is always up to the challenge of trying something new and even though we are all doing the same project, each student is unique and their finished product is too. They are proud of their artwork and love to show it off!
“There is no right or wrong when it comes to making art. Making sure that you have fun is the most important part. Splash a little paint, draw a little line. Just make sure that you have fun each and every time!” –Mickey Mouse

Students Raise Money for Habitat for Humanity
Fort Calhoun Students Lizzie Namuth, Ashlyn Dippel, Kloey Appel, and Anna Polesky raised money for Habitat for Humanity by giving students the chance to vote on which teachers were taped to the wall. Mr. Jones was the top vote-getter with Mr. Hatcher in second. Students also had the opportunity to pay a dollar for a piece of tape. Lizzie said “One of the funniest parts was watching Mrs. Wellman High Horse and Mr. Hatcher have a competition to see who would get taped. I also enjoyed seeing a lot of the junior high kids getting involved and donating a lot of money. I thought it was a fun and competitive way to help raise money for a good cause.” In all, $254.85 was raised.

Dance Camp Fun
Students at Fort Calhoun Elementary had a ton of fun at Dance Camp on Friday, December 15th. Forty girls attended this event organized by the High School Dance Team. This year, they had a Holiday theme and danced at halftime of the Girls’ Varsity Game against Wahoo. Kindergartener Lani said, “it was pretty fun and exciting but it wore me out.” Anna and Jordin agreed that their favorite part was the performance where they danced to songs like Jingle Bell Rock.

Students Visit Autumn Pointe
“Devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.”
One of our freshman homeroom classes has been writing to and visiting a group of Seniors at Autumn Pointe. The students and seniors share stories of family activities, sports and hobbies and life experiences. The ‘pen pals’ write to each other monthly and we visit the retirement home during their homeroom once per month.

Food Drive Success
It was a great year for the food drive at Fort Calhoun Elementary. The event was organized by the student council and a total of 3,450 items were collected! All the items collected were donated to the food pantry at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Calhoun. The winning classrooms got to have a pajama day. The winners were Miss Hall’s class upstairs and Mrs. Larsen’s class downstairs. A fun addition this year was a Putt-Putt course set up with all the cans and items collected. With the help of Mrs. Rutledge, student council members and Mrs. Larsen’s students set up the course in the gym using all the items. All the students had fun playing golf. In addition, the staff at the Elementary school donated 583 items in exchange for jeans days and the students and staff at the Junior-Senior High collected 564 items.
